Best Spots to Catch an Auckland Sunset
You'll love catching a decent sunset if you are anything like me. Whether it's having a picnic, taking photos, or just relaxing as time passes from golden hour to sundown, I'll let you in on the best spots to catch an Auckland Sunset, located just 40 minutes out from the city centre.
North Head, Devonport
Just a 40-minute drive from the city centre is North Head. An extinct volcano and historical military defense, and lookout, built to protect Auckland during the feared Russian invasions in the 1880s.
Get there just as the sun starts to turn everything to a tinted red/orange and you'll learn why this is one of the top spots. Pack a picnic and make an afternoon of it here a top, Maungauika, meaning Mountain of Uika. Position yourself looking over the city toward the harbour bridge and wait for the spectacular scenery to unfold. You won't regret it.
No matter where you are on this West Coast beach you will have an extraordinary sunset before you, stretching out over the water. The light turns everything a stunning shade of orange. I do recommend positioning yourself somewhere along South Piha toward the Keyhole Tunnel. You can get some pretty amazing images looking back toward Lion Rock, and North Piha as well. This place has to be my favourite for relaxing, taking in the sights and playing Photographer for the afternoon. Every. Single. Time. A++++
Yes, another West Coast beach but you will not regret this one either. The sun tends to set towards the south end of the beach where the Gannet Colony nests. Having these birds flying around during the sunset makes for stunning images. As well as the people fishing off the rocks below. Photographers paradise. Take a date, go for a walk, pack a picnic, you'll have the best time and come away feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Huia Point Lookout
Now this place is a favourite no matter the time of day or weather outside. I grew up out here and come here to relax and unwind after a long stressful day from time to time. Located roughly 40 minutes from the city centre, this lookout has some pretty stunning views, made even better by a gorgeous sunset overlooking the Manukau Bar and Whatipu Beach. Yes… West Coast again. This place is super quiet, all you can hear are the birds and bees flying past you, and water lapping at the hillside below.
I, unfortunately, couldn't find a photo from prior visits but I'll make sure to update this soon!
I challenge you to take some time out on a nice clear afternoon to enjoy one or all of the locations named above and let me know what you think in the comments below.
